Artificial Turf, Synthetic Grass Models and Artificial Turf Prices

Suni Çim By general definition, artificial turf is a synthetic turf which had been thought of as an alternative to natural grass, produced from petrol as the raw material. Technically, the turf which is produced from petrol in order to eliminate many disadvantages of the natural grass is filled with granules and formed by close weaving of the fibers from polyethylene material. Most importantly, when answering the question ‘What is artificial turf?’, one should talk about the advantages; artificial turf is a product which is completely safe for human health and therefore, has the feature of being less slippery. In turn, the performance of sports players is affected in a positive way.

Artificial turf is more resistant to wearing compared to natural grass and it can be used without losing its original condition for 8-10 years. Natural grass is negatively affected by the weather and cannot maintain their natural appearance for 12 months. Artificial turf is not affected by the weather for 12 months and maintains its natural appearance and it is environmentally friendly.

What is Artificial Grass and How is it Produced?

As with the other synthetic turfs, landscape synthetic turfs are designed for the areas where natural grass cannot be produced or the maintenance costs are high. Later, they were reinforced with more long-lasting products. Synthetic turf is constituted by three parent materials: synthetic turf yarn, backing coating material and woven cloth for the base. These are generally produced by custom weaving machines at 4 meters in width and 25 meters in length. Synthetic turfs have a long life and they maintain the appearance of natural grass; therefore, they serve their owner for a long period of time.

The first area of use for the artificial grass was the easy-maintenance and low-cost artificial grass project launched by the Ford Foundation at the beginning of the 1960s, upon the realization that children had difficulties to find playgrounds and playfields for sports due to the concretion in cities. Within the scope of this project, the first sports complex to have been manufactured from artificial turf was put into practice in the Moses Brown school of Rhode Island. The first application of the synthetic turf by professional teams and stadiums belonging to these teams due to the maintenance costs of natural grass, difficulty of growing the grass in shading areas, deformation rate, scarce water resources and difficulty of using the grass for an entire year took place in the “Astrodome” stadium built in Houston, Texas in 1966. That is because the Astrodome stadium differed from other stadiums in that they needed the artificial turf since the stadium was a permanently covered stadium.

What are the Use Areas of the Artificial Grass?

Since our living areas are subject to continuous concretion, the artificial turfs which are manufactured from synthetic yarns made from petrol as raw material found their application area in garden landscapes; roof landscapes, balcony and terrace landscapes, and many others, sports fields being in the first place.

The latest technology artificial turfs produced by Nurteks experience are nature-friendly products which are not affected by problems of discoloration, melting and deformation due to rain, snow, frost, hurricane, and the ultraviolet rays of the suns. The synthetic turfs and their agricultural and chemical maintenance medication are self-preserving against unwanted pests. Since artificial grass has a sturdy material structure, it is frequently preferred for garden landscapes, building envelopes and balcony, terrace and roof landscaping.

What are the Advantages of Artificial Grass?

Use of artificial turf has many advantages. It would be more efficient to make comparisons to the natural grass while talking about these advantages. The natural grass changes color under the sun and it is faced with problems such as accumulation of water on top of the grass during rainy weather, growth, the formation of pits and the increasing slickness. Natural grass requires expensive maintenance operations constantly. The synthetic turf is maintenance-friendly at lower costs. The synthetic turf which is produced for the ease of use at intensely used areas such as football fields, tennis courts, hotels, and walking tracks are manufactured with infill at the bottom and polyethylene and polypropylene yarn on the top. At this point, the artificial turf manufacturer Nurteks, which offers varieties of artificial turfs for their clients, achieves a greater yield than the advantages provided by the natural grass with the product they offer.

Natural grass is affected by natural events such as rain and the sun to a great extent. Synthetic turf has a longer life and it is more resistant to natural phenomena. Natural grass is suitable for 3 hours of daily use, especially at football fields. However, the fact that artificial turfs are produced with high-quality standards makes them suitable for intense use during the summer of winter. Artificial turf producer Nurteks alters the features of their products depending on the area of use and provides the desired performance for the users. The areas of use for the artificial turf increase day by day since it is produced with several important features such as not being affected by the rainy weather conditions thanks to the high absorbing capacity, reduced slickness, the bouncing support provided for the ball and the player in the football field.

The artificial turf floor goes through multiple stages when it is laid on the football field carpet. A detailed answer to the question ‘how is artificial turf laid on the football field carpet:’ first of all, drainage channels are dig, geotextile basement tanking is made under the drainage channels and drainpipes are laid. After filling the drainage channels with filtering material, the drainage layer Is formed with number 3 aggregate, then, the field is rectified with number 0,1,2 aggregate and the top drainage layer is formed. Following these stages, the field surface is pressed, felt and the synthetic turf is laid on the surface. Polyester band, which means the seaming tape, is laid under the parts that will be glued and the excess artificial turf is cut. After this process, the adhesive is poured on the seaming tape and the integration is completed.

After the integration is finished, the inner field markings are determined, these areas are cut and the artificial turf produced in white is glued on the markings. Finally, the football field carpet is readied for use by applying the sand and granule infill.

In order to lay artificial turf in a garden, a level surface is needed. This may be concrete, asphalt or soil. Since collapsing may occur on the soil, the best choice for laying artificial turf in the garden is concrete. We recommend that all the organic material is removed previous to the application so that the long, healthy, and comfortable use of the application area is possible. This is not an obligation; however, it is a precaution to be taken in order to increase the long-term use. The second step to answering the question of how is artificial grass laid in the garden is the application phase. After choosing one of the grounds, the felt and synthetic turf are laid on the ground. The next step is placing the polyester band, which means the seaming tape under the parts that will be glued and proceeding with the adhesion. PU based double component adhesive is poured at the joining areas of the artificial turfs and the artificial grass is integrated.

One of the biggest advantages of synthetic turf is that they can be used for long years after they are properly laid on the application field. There are particular variables for artificial turf prices. We can list these variables as such: weight in grams, the quality of the yarn, and the size of the application field… In order to determine the price of the artificial turf per m2; the net area of the project site should be determined and the artificial turf price should be given accordingly. The dimensions of the area to be applied affect the synthetic turf price. Since calculating the artificial grass prices is not possible before evaluating the project, it would be more accurate to calculate based on the project. For example, knowing the m2 of the area in order to calculate the football field carpet artificial turf price per m2 and calculating accordingly would always be more accurate. What is Artificial Grass – Synthetic Grass and Grass Carpet?

In order to answer the question, ‘what is artificial grass?’, we should talk about the purpose of producing artificial grass, and the answer to what artificial grass is will reveal itself. In Turkey, artificial grass started to be used in small commercial football field carpets first and the comfort it provides increased the demand for the product. Later on, the reason behind this demand evolved since the natural grass football fields cannot stand in the face of intense use and traffic, to be used in these areas. That is because, whereas one game, one training session can be held in the natural grass field, the synthetic turf fields pulled this number way up. This evolution also took place by increasing the pile length of the artificial grass and adding the granule infill in the system.

The new system was named as artificial turf or synthetic turf. However, even though this name was used with the purpose of differentiating the system in the beginnings of 2000s, all these names express the same meaning and content. Surely, the natural grass field formed at the correct standard provides a more comfortable use than the artificial grass. Therefore, artificial grass is not a 100% alternative to the natural grass. However, it is obligatory to use the product instead of the natural grass in the areas where the difficult maintenance, intense use, weather conditions, scarce water resources, and inhabitability are in question for the latter. Due to this obligation, using artificial grass became a habit and influenced our daily life in many areas. We can see artificial turfs not only in commercial football field carpets but also in regular football fields, training fields of professional clubs, landscape areas, refuges, and even on the building facades.
